This is the Neo 1973 phone from OpenMoko, built on a GNU / Linux based open source platform. OpenMoko took some time with this phone, with a 2.8 inch 480 x 460 resolution screen it defiantly stands out. The fact of it is, OpenMoko designed a phone with a total opensource feel to it. They have developer kits to buy so you can write your own software for it. You will not be tied to Say Apple’s ITunes program to load in your data. You can use what you want too. With all the new linux distros out there the the software will be easier to come by. Now for the hardware:
- 120.7 x 62 x 18.5 (mm)
- 2.8″ VGA (480×640) TFT Screen
- Samsung s3c2410 SoC @ 266 MHz
- Global Locate AGPS chip
- Ti GPRS (2.5G not EDGE)
- Unpowered USB 1.1
- Touchscreen
- micro-sd slot
- 2.5mm audio jack
- 2 additional buttons
- 1200 mAh battery (charged over USB)
- 128 MB SDRAM
- 64 MB NAND Flash
- Bluetooth (2.0)
Will this be the next rival to the IPone. I dont think so. It will need to be pretty stable and easy to use before anyone looking for an easy smartphone would ever consider it. But time will tell.
Here are some screen shots:
