The Importance of Clearing Your Internet Cache and History
The other night I was at a computer job. The computer was infested with spyware and viruses. I went through the machine and cleaned it all up. Then the big question, “How can we keep my son from getting on porn sites.” I know everyone has done that one search that leads to a porn site but really kids at the age of 6 aren’t out looking for porn are they? My first order of business was finding out how the kid actually found the porn site his mom caught him on. It was pretty simple, clicking the down arrow in Internet Explorer yielded a wealth of porn sites. The kid really had quite a few to choose from. That’s when the husband and wife admitted to actually browsing porn.(Big Shock)
I find this is the case in at least 35% of the homes I travel too. People surf the porn sites on the same computer their kids do there homework or play games on. How can this be avoided? Pretty simple if you ask me, there is at least 1 full proof method. Don’t surf on that machine, but they’re others too. You can enable content filtering with a password, which again is pretty easy to do. Then if you want to surf to those sites all you have to do is disable content filtering. Another way would be to have supervised internet time with the kid. That’s a big shocker, spending time showing your kids, the internet is a wealth of information, can be very rewarding. I know, I know, some kids aren’t keen on you watching over there shoulder while they IM their friends and browse MySpace. This calls for another method.
There are numerous content filters or internet filters on the market, but your biggest defense is keeping your machine clear of tempting links. Back to that computer job, the husband and wife had no clue it was that simple for their son to find the sites they were visiting. A simple cleanup would have spared them the embarrassment. You really want to see some embarrassed people. A 28 year old tech finds the couples secret in less than 20 minutes. Update I also added Opera and Safari
Okay so how do we clean our history and temporary internet files?
- In internet explorer go to the tools menu and click internet options
- On the General Tab look for the Browsing history Section
- Click Delete
- Click Delete files on the next screen.
- Click Delete History from the next screen.
For Mozilla Firefox
- Goto the tools menu and click options
- Click the privacy tab
- Click clear now
- Make sure Browsing history and cache is checked
- Click Clear Private Data Now
(Side note – you can have mozilla auto clear this every time you exit firefox.)
- On the privacy tab check: Always clear my private data when I close firefox.(That way when you exit quickly it all goes away
.
For Opera
1. Form the File menu select preferences.
2. From Preferences click history and cache.
3. To clear typed in addresses and history click clear.
4. To clear Disk Cache click Empty now.
For Safari
1. From the Safari menu, click Empty Cache.
2. When asked are you sure click Empty.
That could save you a lot of embarrassment when your kids find what porn site you’re visiting. Can you really scold your kids for being their. Probably not because you left the door cracked and all they did was walk in. So next time your surfing the porn sites remember to cover your tracks or your kid could follow them to where you don’t want them to be.

Nice tricks for the newbies. But you might also want to include Opera and Safari in that list. There is a big user base of these browsers, too.

@Navi – Thanks for the suggestion I also added them.

Michael:
Great post title. I found you through ProBlogger’s project.
One suggestion I would make for your blog is to include a
“Related Posts” notice following each post with the blog post titles hyperlinked.
this will help with your internal linking structure and improve your link popularity with important keywords.
also, one last thought. If you include your blog’s most important keywords as categories, it will greatly strengthen
your search engine positioning over the long run.

@Robert
Thank you for the great suggestions. I do have the related posts under each post with hyperlinked post titles. Im not sure why they did not show up for you. The other suggestion is great I will work on implementing that right away.
Thanks,
Michael

Hi, here via Problogger.
Love your design, really clean and simple. In fact, jealous…..
Can I also add a couple of comments?
- all that subscribing junk is messy and detracts from your clean design. There are apps you can get that open all the options (leaves more space for something else)
Also went to subscribe by email and could not find the option. Not all of us use RRS
Re this post – how about telling people to clear their search terms in Google? Picked up some great search terms at homefrom my (nearly) adult children.!!!!

@Frank – Just wanted to say thank you for the posative feedback on the design. I took to heart what you had to say about the subscribe junk. I really didn’t like it either but I think I came up with a cleaner design. And Subscribe Via Email is also active so come on back and subscribe.
Thanks
Michael

Hi,
I followed your link from the Problogger group writing project earlier but I didn’t have a chance to read your post. I came back again today and I just wanted to say wow. Your site looks much more professional. I think it’s great that you took advice on board so quickly.
As for the post, I enjoyed reading it. The title definitely pulled me in and it’s good that you found a funny way to get such an important point across.
The one thing I would say, is that the masses of text at the top put me off a little to start off. Maybe you could break it up with a related image of some sort… although the images related to this post might be a little unsuitable

@Hazel – Thanks for the comment, I really take to heart what the readers of problogger had to say. I just needed that extra push to make the changes. On a side note i took you up on your idea, when writing I couldn’t think of a decent picture to include. Well now I did. Hope you enjoy.

Michael:
From my earlier comment I had missed completely the “Related Post” (should be plural) links you have after each post.
You have a very professional design, and design is something that I have not had time to work on at my blog.
One of these days I will replace the default Wordpress theme.
A couple of suggestions I have to offer concern the readability of your posts. (Way back when I got a Masters Degree in Developmental and Remedial Reading).
(1)Make all text in boldface
(2)Use SIZE and COLOR for emphasis, not boldface
(3)Increase font size. Try (font size=”3″) for a start since you have a Wordpress platform and that is what I use on my Wordpress blog.
(4)Do not make any paragraph longer than 3-4 lines.
You will find visitors will stay on your site longer and be more inclined to read your posts.
Long, unbroken text is a NO-NO and serves as an intimidation factor that prevents the visitor from even getting started reading your text. Hazel in her comment above alluded to this factor.
All in all you have a wonderful blog that should continue to evolve into something even greater.
Best of success,
Robert A. Kearse

Great title and valuable information. I wish I could have seen the parent’s eyes when you pointed out their “guilty pleasure’ as the root of Little Johnny’s curious questions! lol
